New Zealand softwood log production during CY 2007 is on par with the previous year. During MY 2007 (July 1/June 30), total wood product exports reached NZ $3.37 billion (US $2.53 billion), up 15% from the previous year. The increase is largely attributable to increased pulp and paper exports and a mini boom in log exports. The domestic lumber market remains firm but lumber exports during the third quarter of CY 2007 fell approximately 10% on a value basis compared to the same period the previous year, due largely to the sharp downturn in U.S. housing starts.
