II Consenso Informato Al Trattamento dei Soggetti Affetti da Demenza: Aspetti Etici, Deontologici e Giuridici (Informed Consent to Treatment of Persons with Dementai: Ethical, Deonotological and Juridical Aspects)

Making reference to a clinical trial coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanit (the National Institute of Health in Italy), the problem of informed consent in patients with dementia participating in experimentation and in clinical practice is discussed. The first chapter deals with the ethical aspects of clinical experimentation involving patients who are unable to give informed consent. In the second chapter methods are described to evaluate patients ability to consent to treatment. The third and fourth chapters describe two instruments for the management of incapable patients: the first one is the advanced directive and is presented and discussed also with a view on the meaning and value of family involvement in therapeutic decisions; the second one is the legal instrument of the supporting trustee.
