In the research of new, safe and efficacious drugs for human health, natural products have been recently rediscovered as a potential source of innovative therapeutics with the perspective of integrating and sometimes also replacing conventional drugs. This is the first national Conference sponsored by the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanita; ISS) following the formation of the ISS intramural study group 'Innovative Therapies and Natural Products (TISNa)'. The purpose of the congress is strengthening the present scientific-cultural and multidisciplinary growth in the field of natural products' research, as well as promoting future aggregation and scientific co-operation with other countrywide scientific Institutions. Most importantly, the TISNa wishes to propel the use of stringent scientific methodologies in the assessment of old and new natural products. The conference is planned to convey six sessions dealing with chemical characterization, biological activity (antimicrobial, anti-neoplastic, immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory), clinical applications, safety profile and regulatory aspects of natural products.
