Exports Support American Jobs: Updated Measure will Quantify Progress as Global Economy Recovers

On March 11, 2010, President Barack Obama issued an executive order creating the National Export Initiative (NEI), which aims to double U.S. exports over the next five years in support of 2 million jobs here at home. The NEI recognizes that exports will play a critical role in catalyzing Americas near- and long-term economic growth, and it represents the first time the United States will have a government-wide export promotion strategy with focused attention from the president and his Cabinet. The report that follows is an analytical complement to the NEI, demonstrating the fundamental role that exports already play in the U.S. economy and providing the methodological framework that will be used to track progress in meeting the presidents goals.
