A considerable number of frostbite injuries were incurred both in ground and air combat in World War II. With higher altitudes being the goal of the future, it is likely that frostbite will continue to be a problem of importance. The treatment of frostbite injuries to date has been based largely on general surgical principles of the management of severely damaged tissues. Experimental inquiries into the development of more effective modes of therapy of frozen tissue are few and controversial.nIt was the object of this study to investigate some of the factors concerned in the production of frostbite and to evaluate various means of treatment of experimentally produced freezes.
