THE APPLICATION OF ULTRASONIC ENERGY TO COLD WELDING OF METALS

Equipment was devised and experiments were carried out in the ultrasonic spot and seam welding of non-fer¬rous sheet material in .005" and .010" gages without the use of elevated temperatures. Ultrasonically spotwelded 2S aluminum developed adequate strength and pressure-sealing characteristics in reasonable ultrasonic exposure tine and at reasonable power levels. Internal deforma¬tions of the faying surfaces were present, but no com¬parable external indentation occurred. No corrosion effects were evident after 2000 hours of exposure to salt water or to aerated distilled water at 95℃ Preliminary experiments indicated that other metals, particularly brass, copper, and gilding metal, can be ultrasonically welded.nIt is recommended that the process be further de¬veloped to establish relationship between ultrasonic parameters and material properties, and to encompass heavier gages and other materials.
