Various sizes of these couplings were then fabricated for evaluation purposes. The main objection to most of these couplings was their com¬plexity and the excessive amount of space required. Another undesirable feature was that all were subject to freezing when wet and none except the bayonet lock was adapted to the application of leverage to break a frozen connection. None of the couplings except possibly the bayonet lock afforded enough take up during the application of leverage of the locking action to promise a durable pressure tight seal with rubber gaskets or resilient inserts.nWith this type of coupling, two mating connectors could be fully mated with less than one full turn of the coupling nut. Initially it was believed that a means of locking the coupling nut after assembly would be required but libration tests proved that this would not be necessary.
