SALINE WATER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS REPORT NO. 5 SOLAR DISTILLATION OF SEA WATER IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

During the winter of 1948-l949, the Federal Works Agency of the United States Governmen investigated the possibility of increasing the supply of fresh water in the Virgin -Islands by solar distillation of sea water. An experimental program, supervised by G . L. Rounds, was undertaken in order that (a), the productivity of a simple glass-covered solar evaporating pan could be determined, (b), the operating problems which might be encountered in a large-scale unit could be anticipated, and (c), the means for handling these problems under the conditions prevailing in the Virgin Islands could, be developed.
