AFCRC TN 55-53 presented results indicating that speech picked up at the ear of a talker was more intelligible than that recorded at the talker's lips when the resultant signals were heard in noise. Speech from these two sources was simultaneously recorded with the same type of pickup — the Dyne-Lab D-69 Magnetic Insert Trans¬ducer, one of which was coupled to the speaker's right ear by a custom fitted plastic earmold, the other posi¬tioned 3 cm. below and slightly in front of the lips. The test words were recorded in quiet, and played back in three levels of noise to test their intelligibility.
