The attenuation of radiation from spherical and hemispherical sources by plane-parallel dispersions of infinite lateral dimensions was in¬vestigated experimentally and theoretically. Dispersions composed of uni¬formly-sized, nonabsorbing particles and bounded by one partially reflecting surface were considered. The hemispherical sources were all centered on the partially reflecting boundary. Hemispherical sources entirely within and partially within and spherical sources entirely within, partially within, and entirely outside the dispersion were all considered.nA six-component representation of the intensity was utilized to ob¬tain analytical solutions. These solutions are actually for a cylindrical source with an arbitrary distribution of strength within the dispersion. The estimation of the cylindrical source equivalent to a spherical or hemispheri¬cal source is indicated. The portion of the source outside the dispersion is treated separately. The theoretical- solutions are in the form of infinite series, but the general portion of the computations have been carried out on a computing machine, and the results are tabulated. Application of these numerical results is illustrated.
