The demand for higher performance aircraft engines has resulted in increases in engine operating temperatures and pressures* In turn, this has necessitated the adoption of new shaft seal materials and refine¬ment in shaft seal design.nThis development program was undertaken to develop rubbing seals that would operate for 1000 hours, at 1000°F. and at a rubbing speed of 30,000 feet per minute. Accordingly, new materials were investigated; these materials were incorporated in seals; and their performance as seals was evaluated.
