The productive capacity of forest land in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia often varies greatly by soil and topography from one area to another over relatively short distances. Gross differences in site quality are readily recognized on the same slope. As forest land values continue to increase and management practices become more intensive, foresters and forest land managers are becoming more and more aware of the need to predict the productive capacity of the land.
