Technical Report on 10' Diameter Hollow Glass Spheres for Brown and Root, Inc., Project Mohole

摘要

It was determined that the 10 inch diameter tested hollow glass spheres are completely adequate for oceanographic work requiring a bouyancy unit to withstand pressures in excess of 10,000 PSI. It is recommended that these spheres be suitably coated to improve their impact strength. Such spheres when used in large quantities can be manufactured to sell for considerably less than $1.00 a pound of bouyancy. After considerable study of various flotation materials available for deep water applications, it becomes apparent that glass is probably one of the most fessible as well as the least expensive materials.
