An Energy Absorbing Reusable Highway Protective System

An energy absorbing reusable highway protective barrier system is described which utilizes an attenuator whose characteristics are uniquely applicable to the barrier system and yet is inexpensive to manufacture. The preliminary design of three separate and distinct barrier system configurations are studied. For each of the three cases, the barrier is designed such that for a sixty mile per hour head-on impact by a 4,000 pound vehicle, into the barrier, the vehicle's occupants will experience a maximum deceleration of ten g's. The barrier is specifically designed for protection against a large number of highway hazard elements (immovable objects) now in existence, whose elimination or modification using comventional protective barriers is impractical.
