Harmonic Overvoltages on Capacitively Loaded Unbalanced Synchronous Machines. A Digital Study with Parameters Applicable to Grand Coulee Third Powerplant

Overvoltage conditions caused by harmonics generated during line-to-line fault conditions on EHV lines charged by large synchronous machines were studied with digital techniques. Included were considerations of losses in the machine, transformer, and line; machine rotor impedances; and approximations for machine saturation. These studies show the overvoltage magnitudes are influenced primarily by the machine saliency ratio and line parameters. Saturation and losses contribute to the reduction of harmonic overvoltages.
