Two-Phase Two-Component Critical Flow in a Venturi

The purpose of this study was to establish a functional relationship between the primary flow variables at, and just upstream of, the point of critical or choking flow for a liquid-gas mixture. The primary variables were pressure, mass flowrate, quality (i.e. ratio of gas mass flow to total mass flow), and the geometry of the flow channel. Experimental and analytical work are reported for air-water flow in a converging-diverging annular venturi with critical and near-critical conditions at the throat. Pressure tappings were placed at regular intervals along the straight outer wall of the venturi and, since the profiled inner core could be moved axially, accurate pressure data could be obtained in the region of the throat where the pressure gradients were very steep. Measurements were made of the flow-rate, thickness and temperature of the liquid film flowing on the outer wall at the venturi and this information was of great value to the analysis. (Author)
