The Current Position of Thermomechanical Treatments Applied to Engineering and Tool Steels

The current position in the development of thermomechanical treatments as applied to several engineering and tool steels is reviewed. Attractive combinations of strength and toughness can be produced depending on alloy composition and the operational conditions. The primary advantages of these techniques have been considered in terms of increased strength/weight ratio, improved fatigue life and the possible upgrading of cheaper materials to meet more stringent specifications. The use of thermomechanically treated components appears to be limited to specialised applications. (Author)
