A Study and Evaluation of the Testing of the Ohio Department of Highways Bituminous Concrete Mixes

The goals of the project were to determine (a) if the trial procedures are practical and can be initiated into practice with little difficulty; (b) if present production control is adequate to produce material in conformance with the trial specifications; (c) the effect of the trial specifications on contract prices. The scope of the work reported here concerns only those portions of the Bureau of Public Roads Research and Development Trial Specifications having to do with the composition of mixtures, including Marshall tests. It does not include the portion covering construction, spreading and finishing, and compaction. Tests were made at six bituminous concrete plants during normal production for Ohio Department of Highways projects to obtain mix temperature, bitumen content, aggregate gradation and material coatability. For comparison purposes, bitumen content and gradation obtained by normal inspection procedure are included herein. (Author)
