A description is presented of a technique to measure the dynamic response of solids to energy deposition by electron beams. A laser interferometer is used to obtain the rear surface displacement as a function of time of a specimen heated by an electron pulse. Measurements of the one-dimensional elastic response of aluminum and a thermoelastic calculation provided a value of the room temperature Gruneisen parameter, for T6-6061 aluminum of 2.00 plus or minus 15 percent. Calculations using the code Wondy confirmed the result. The laser interferometer technique provides a useful research tool for investigating both material properties and electron beams themselves.
