The Anaerobic Filter for the Treatment of Brewery Press Liquor Waste.

In a typical brewing process spent grains from the lauter tub and hop strainer are collected in a press where they are concentrated (pressed) for further drying and processing for cattle feed. The waste liquor from the pressing operation is characterized by a very high concentration of dissolved organics (COD varies from 6,000to 24,000mg/l), a moderately low concentration of suspended organics which can very readily be removed by sedimentation,and a high temperature,usually 125-130F. The objective of the investigation was to evaluate the performance of two anaerobic laboratory-scale filters,one of which was operated at a constant loading of 50lb COD/1000cu ft/day. The loading for the other filter was increased to 100lb COD/1000cu ft/day,and the concentration of buffering and trace element solutions were varied. A COD removal efficiency of 90% or greater was achieved under all conditions and loadings and the results of this investigation indicate that the anaerobic filter is a feasible means of treating brewery press liquor waste.
