Scrambling and Unscrambling Files for Security.

Files are transmitted over great distances,even on commercial lines,or stored in modern computer systems,without protection for privacy or security in most cases. The present paper gives a short survey on previous efforts for scrambling transmissions,then suggests a method for solving the problems encountered in the newer ones. The proposed solution for security is based on encyphering and decyphering the files with a one-time pad before and after transmission,respectively. It can also be applied to codes and unchanged to files stored in the system. Possible extensions for greater security are discussed briefly. The Appendix presents several versions of FORTRAN programs for the tasks,together with a number of executed test cases. (Author)
