Some Aspects of Static and Slow Dynamic Grip Strength

Various handle radii, handle openings, and handle types were investigated and found to affect static and slow dynamic grip strength capability as measured via a hydraulic hand tool simulator. Slow dynamic grip strength capability averaged 82.57% of static strength capability. Attempts were made to predict dynamic capability from conventional hand dynamometer capability and anthropometric dimensions through these techniques. Results suggest that a simple moment analysis will suffice when considering different handle radii, especially for static tasks. The fact that a 10% decrement in grip strength occurred when square handles were substituted for contoured handles suggests that handle shapes would become an increasingly significant factor under prolonged or extended work cycles and under conditions involving radical differences in handle design.
