摘要

Attempts have been made to improve the design of arterivenous cannulae for chronic hemodialysis. An end-to-side anastomosis has been evaluated and has been found to be superior to the standard end-to-end junction,in that it preserves the patency of the parent vessel. To allow for flexibility in selection of parent vessels, a section of vein graft has been incorporated between parent vessel and cannula. In this composite design the vein graft is anastomosed end-to-side to the parent vessel and end-to-end to the silastic cannula. This design has resulted in increased duration of patency as compared to control standard arteriovenous shunts. An improved configuration of the end-to-end vein cannula junction has been developed incorporating a Dacron velour sleeve and has been tested. The development of a self-sealing cannula as a significant addition to the above design has been undertaken.
