The purpose of this study was to measure solute transport and ultrafiltration rate in the Standard Kiil (SK) and Multiple Point Support (MPS) dialyzers and determine if equivalent long term therapeutic results could be obtained in patients who were treated with both SK and MPS dialyzers with prescribed hours of dialysis per week inversely proportional to the creatinine clearance ratio of the two dialyzers. These studies resulted in the following conclusions:The effective area and permeability of cuprophane membrane are strongly but reproducibly dependent on membrane support geometry. Effective membrane area for ultrafiltration ranges from 1to 2sq m in Kiil and MPS dialyzers compared to ultrafiltration cell values for cuprophane PT-150membrane. The MPS dialyzer was found to have nearly 50% higher clearances than the SK for all solutes studied over a MW range of 60-5000. Equivalent clinical results were achieved with MPS and SK therapy when net clearance was held constant. Evaluation of 6 Markley kidneys was accomplished and reported.
