Health Hazard Evaluation Determination Report No. HHE-77-035-423, Ford Motor Company, Vinyl Operations Plant, Mt. Clemens, Michigan

A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on March 23-24, 1977 at the Mt. Clemens Vinyl Operations Plant of the Ford Motor Company. The survey was limited to the vinyl fabric laminator and embosser process, and the wood grain vinyl decal process, and was prompted because an operator was found to have liver damage, or 'toxic hepatitis.' Environmental sampling failed to demonstrate any detectable levels of vinyl chloride (75014) monomer in the areas surveyed. The airborne concentrations of methyl ethyl ketone (78933) recorded during the cleaning operations were not toxic. The airborne concentrations of various other solvents did not exceed the prevailing standards, either individually or combined. Lightheadedness indicated that periodic mild acute toxicity did occur. No objective medical data demonstrated that chemical exposure was the cause of liver damage found in the vinyl equipment operator, but there was subjective evidence suggestive of a possible toxic cause for the disorders.
