Highlights of Workshop on Primary Nursing Care - Southeastern Regional Medical Education Center, Birmingham, Alabama, Held on March 7-8, 1977

In this workshop, primary nursing care is explored as an alternative to team nursing. In primary care, a single nurse assumes the principal role of nursing a patient through the stay in the health care facility, establishing and maintaining a supportive relationship and providing the required direction, supervision, judgement, and coordination of care. The workshop presentations identify and discuss ways of dealing with problems and concerns related to implementation of primary nursing care in the VA Nursing Service. The points of view of nurses, nurse administrators, and hospital directors are presented, together with field experiences, comparative case studies, and the results of a national survey of primary nursing care in VA hospitals.
