The Maryland Power Plant Siting Program is responsible for the assessment of radiological impact resulting from the operation of nuclear power plants within the State. To that end, the Program has initiated various studies to measure the levels of radiation and concentrations of radionuclides in the environs of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. This report documents the pertinent aspects of the instrumentation and procedures employed in the routine measurement of ambient radiation field intensity. A thermoluminescence dosimetry system is utilized. Criteria for the selection of thermoluminescent material, a deployable dosimeter package and an absorbed dose readout device are documented. Dose response is documented as a function of radiation energy, dosimeter orientation and dosimeter annealing procedures. Absorbed dose fade rate and dosimeter package contribution to total dose are estimated. The zero-dose readout value is investigated. The routine environmental radiation measurement procedures are documented.
