摘要

The report covers the work by Union Carbide Corporation with Roswell Park Memorial Institute's Maxillofacial Prosthetics Laboratory as a subcontractor on the development of improved materials for extraoral maxillofacial prosthesis. A large number of new elastomeric compositions (many of which were block copolymers) were screened for prosthesis utility. The prime candidate was a C-4polycarbonate/silicone rubber block foam. This composite gave a very lightweight,flexible,and tough prosthetic article with features superior to the state of the art. The negative features included some shrinkage and difficulty of fabrication relative to silicone rubber. These results combined with the recent introduction of a markedly improved silicone rubber precluded this candidate from clinical evaluations. (Color illustrations reproduced in black and white.)
