摘要

The biological treatment of domestic wastewater involves processes primarily designed to reduce the water's biochemical oxygen demand by enhancing conditions suitable for microorganisms capable of degrading and removing organic compounds. A reduction in the numbers of pathogenic bacteria during this process is a result of competition for survival and many pathogens will stay viable after a completed biological treatment. A reduction or the removal of viable pathogens is currently done by disinfection. Information on the role of biologic agents in the removal of pathogenic bacteria from polluted waters is scarce. The discovery of Bdellovibrio bacteriovous in 1962opened up a possible new area for biological water purification as B. bacteriovorus can attack and destroy a variety of pathogenic and potential pathogenic gram negative bacteria, especially bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The report covers a study on isolation and distribution of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus in different waters in the vicinity of Auburn,Alabama.
