This thesis describes development of a computer program which configures a Computerized Manufacturing System (CMS) from optimized part data. The overall objective is to increase production of small parts of rotation by grouping similar parts into a CMS. Additionally, the CMS provides management with cost effectiveness information. The CMS consists of a small number of numerical control (N/C) machine tools fed by a closed loop conveyor with automatic feed robots. Both machines and conveyor are controlled by a central computer. The universe consists of all machine tools that could be considered for the CMS. The Configuration Program selects a number of these machines for use in a CMS that would be able to automatically produce the given parts. Balanced machine loading is considered, and the proper number and types of machines for the given part mix are determined. A primary and backup operation schedule also is obtained. Program evaluation involved defining measurement parameters and judging their performance for each iteration. The configuration program appears to be a quick, valid method of constructing a CMS from optimized part data. The algorithm is heuristic but logical, and the level of detail is sufficient to permit reasonable management conclusions to be drawn.
