An algorithm is described for converting region boundaries in an image array into chain encoded line structures. The primary objectives governing the development of the algorithm were to develop a scheme for encoding the line structure extracted from a gray line image and to develop a representation for the coded image that is suitable for further processing. The data structure used to represent a line segment is described and the three separate parts of the chain generation process are addressed. The problem of representing and encoding the intersection of line segments is examined and ways to determine whether one line segment intersects with another are noted. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by a number of examples. The linked list representation for a line structure is shown to be a useful tool for scene analysis.
