Archaeological Investigations at the Commercial Pacific Cable Company Station and Marine Barracks, Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

Under contract with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Pacific Consulting Services, Inc. (PCSI) completed archaeological investigations at the Commercial Pacific Cable Company station (Cable Station, State of Hawaii Site 50-93-01-001) and two U.S. Marine barracks (Marine Barracks, State of Hawaii Site 50-93-01-002) located on Sand Island within the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. The project was undertaken in anticipation of a lead removal and encapsulation program that will, in part, remove contaminated sands from around the Cable Station buildings and Marine Barracks. The fieldwork was conducted between 6 October and 12 October, 2011. The goal of the project was to identify and characterize subsurface cultural resources, evaluate their potential National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) significance, and provide recommendations to the USFWS.
