Plan and Operation of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1976-80. Programs and Collection Procedures Series 1, No. 15

A description of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics on a probability sample of the U.S. population 6 months through 74 years of age. A summary is given of the data collection techniques used in the survey, which included questionnaires, an examination by a physician, special clinical procedures and tests, X-rays, urine tests, and tests on blood samples. The target conditions of the survey are listed and the components designed to provide measurements of these conditions are described. These target conditions were diabetes, liver disease, allergy, osteoarthiritis and disc degeneration, cardiovascular conditions, spirometry, speech pathology and hearing, and body burdens of lead, carbon monoxide, and pesticides. Examination components designed to permit an assessment of nutritional status are also summarized. The sample design and the operational plan of the survey are described along with quality control procedures. Data collection forms used in the survey are included in an appendix.
