Identification and Assessment of Possible Alternative Methods for Catching Yellowfin Tuna

Thousands of porpoise are killed or injured incidentally each year in the yellowfin tuna purse seine fishery in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Development and use of porpoise-saving fishing gear and fishing practices has resulted in substantial reduction, but not elimination, of this incidental mortality and injury. This report summarizes the results of a meeting held at the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute, San Diego, California, in May 1981 to identify possible alternatives and the types of research which would be needed to evaluate the potential economic viability of possible alternatives so identified.
