摘要

The isolation and characterization of an influenza A virus from the lungs and brains of dead seals has been a biologically important finding. The 8 genes of the virus were all related to known avian strains, yet the virus preferentially replicated in mammals. This provides the first evidence that an avian influenza virus has the potential to transmit to mammals and cause disease. A new hemagglutinin subtype has been isolated and studies have shown that many avian strains have the potential for replication in mammalian species.
