Literature Search and Partial Cultural Resource Inventory of Chassahowitzka, Cedar Keys, and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuges

The Southeast Conservation Archeology Center conducted a background literature search and partial cultural resource inventory of certain parts of the Chassahowitzka, Cedar Keys and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuges in February 1980. A total of 36 prehistoric and two historic sites were visited, 17 of which were previously unrecorded. A surface and subsurface survey of slated impact areas in the Chassahowitzka Refuge yield two sites within proposed development boundaries. The four primary islands of the Cedar Keys Refuge were surveyed and the Seahorse Key Lighthouse was nominated to the National Register. Fifteen tracts of land in the proposed Lower Suwannee Refuge were arbitrarily chosen for survey. Typical sites include lithic concentrations and shell mounds or middens and represent Archaic to historic occupation. The area can be expected to yield information regarding transmission and local adaptation of cultural traits, prehistoric ecology and settlement patterns.
