Age-Related Differences in Picture Memory

The possibility of age-related deficits in verbal coding through use of a resemblance-recognition task was investigated. Results of these experiments suggest technique refinements to accommodate individual differences in use of verbal information. Elderly subjects showed trend towards a verbal advantage in the discrimination task suggesting that the latter may not always be free of verbal coding effects. Generally, the results indicate reliable age differences in memory for scenes. They suggest that these differences reflect both verbal-coding deficits and nonverbal-coding in elderly subjects.
