The State of the Art in the Routing and Scheduling of Vehicles and Crews: Executive Summary

Two of the fundamental considerations in the distribution of goods from plants to warehouses to customers are to determine the best locations for the plants and warehouses and the most effective and efficient ways to transport the goods from the plants to the warehouses to the customers. The plant and warehouse location problem has been referred to as the strategic problem while the transportation problem is referred to as the tactical problem. To operate efficiently, an organization needs to find the best compromise in solving these two problems in order to appropriately balance its capital and operating expenditures.
