The water chemistry, hydrology, and benthic primary production of the Logan River, in the Bear River Mountains in northern Utah, were monitored for one year to study the potential influence of periphyton photosynthesis on calcium carbonate precipitation in the river. Radioisotopic tracers were used to measure periphyton photosynthesis and calcium carbonate precipitation concurrently in laboratory experiments to investigate the effects of water temperature, velocity and macronutrient concentration on calcium carbonate precipitation induced by photosynthesis.
