Vaccino Influenzale Pandemico: Stima dell'Efficacia sul Campo in Italia, 2009-2010. (Influenza Pandemic Vaccine: Estimates of Vaccine Effectiveness, Italy, 2009-2010.)

During 2009-2010 pandemic season, within the I-MOVE project, we conducted two studies (screening and casecontrol) to estimate pandemic influenza VE. Both studies were conducted in the framework of the Influenza Italian Sentinel Surveillance System (Influnet). In the case-control study 40 sentinel practitioners enrolled 172 ILI (Influenza-Like-Illness) cases, 149 of which were laboratory tested and 21 resulted confirmed influenza cases and 128 controls. The small sample size and the absence of vaccinated patients among cases and controls did not allow an estimation of VE. For the screening method we included in the analysis 780 confirmed A/H1N1v cases. Overall twenty cases (2.6%) had received at least one dose of vaccine. The estimated VE (vaccine effectiveness) was 93.2% (95% CI: 51.3-99.0) for those vaccinated >14 days before swabbing and 72.5% (95% CI: 26.5-89.7) for those vaccinated 8-14 days before swabbing. The point estimate VE suggests that pandemic vaccines offered good protection to medically-attended influenza laboratory confirmed cases.
