摘要

Fine-grained soils of low plasticity (plasticity index less than 10 to 12), including a large proportion of the loessial areas of Kansas and Nebraska, are sufficiently low in permeability for a compacted soil lining. However, these soils are subject to erosion from flowing water and wind-wave action and may need protection, such as a granular cover, to resist erosion. In some areas, good cover materials are not locally available and would have to be imported at considerable expense. In 1958, after some preliminary laboratory tests were made, experimental test sections of compacted soil lining, with small amounts of Type I portland cement added for stabilization, were placed on the Driftwood Canal, which is located in Nebraska on the Frenchman-Cambridge Division of the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program. Samples of the cement-treated lining were obtained in 1981, and the lining was evaluated by observations of the test reaches and from laboratory tests.
