U.S. EPA Clean Lakes Program Forest Lake Study

Forest Lake, Missouri has high concentrations of algae, especially blue-green algae oscillatoria rubescens, which can cause taste problems and odor problems. Water quality could be improved by reducing phosphorus concentrations in the water column which could lead to improved transparency and reduction in algae. Recommend hypolimnetic withdrawal (the selective withdrawal of hypolimnetic waters high in phosphorus), or nutrient inactivation/nutrient precipitation. The report was prepared in partial fulfillment of an EPA Clean Lakes Program grant.
