This is the first part of notes for five lectures in a course on Rock Fracture Mechanics at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine in Italy, July 5-9, 1982. The report is mainly a synthesis of previous analytical work but section 3.3, which describes a formal approach to the uniform growth of a star crack, hasn't been published before. Topics covered in this report include the following: Introduction to blasting configurations; Idealized crack systems; Complex representation and conformal mapping; Path - independent integrals.
