Thermal Conductivity of Liquids Using the Transient Hot-Wire Method

The transient hot-wire method for measuring the thermal conductivity of a liquid has become the generally accepted technique; its theory is presented. The experimental improvements introduced by Raal et al. and the author are described. A new measurement procedure has been developed which improves the quality of the measurementys by ensuring equal rates of heat production per unit length in both measuring and reference cells at all temperatures. The interpretation of the results can also provide information on the thermal diffusivity.
