Equip Tips: How to Operate and Maintain Septic Tank/Soil-Absorption Systems

Guidelines for operation and maintenance of septic tank/soil-absorption systems are provided for use at remote government-owned administrative sites and recreation facilities. Clogging due to solids buildups is the most typical problem found in malfunctioning systems. After an illustrated outline of the structure and function of dosing tanks and soil-absorption systems, guidelines are provided for locating the system, pumping septic and dosing tanks, measuring solid waste buildup, system inspections, record keeping, reducing water generation, troubleshooting the system, and preventing health hazards while working with the system.
