On March 30, 1982, direct-reading breathing-zone air samples for nitrous oxide and mercury were taken on the two dentists and their assistants. Area air samples for nitrous oxide and mercury were also taken in the clinic. Leak testing was performed on the anesthetic gas administering machine. Work practices and techniques were observed and employees were informally interviewed. NIOSH investigators determined that the personnel in this dental office were overexposed to N2O. Mercury levels were not found to pose a health hazard during the survey, although some contamination was noted.
