Testing Truck-Mounted Vacuum and Air Conveyor Systems for Oil Spill Recovery

Two different vacuum truck designs were evaluated for oil recovery performance at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Oil and Hazardous Materials Simulated Environmental Test Tank (OHMSETT) facility in September 1980. These were a Vactor Model 2045 air conveyor design made by the Meyers-Sherman Company and a standard vacuum truck made by Coleman Environmental and Pollution Control Equipment Co., Inc. Changes in recovery efficiency and oil recovery rate were found while varying oil slick thickness, oil viscosity, hose length, and air pump speed for the trucks. The air conveyor was additionally tested using different suction hose heights above the slick.
