摘要

A walk through survey was conducted to evaluate high velocity, low volume technology (HVLV) at the Fabrication Division of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company (SIC-3729) in Renton, Washington, on June 9, 1983. The potential use of HVLV in the graphite (7440440) composite industry was explored. About 9000 workers are employed by the Division, 165 of whom are in composite production activities. The graphite composite trim process consisted of positioning composite parts on benches or platforms for hand tool edging or trimming. The area was designed to be under negative pressure and a local exhaust HVLV system was installed. Potential hazards existed from the release of binder dust and fibers during machining. Environmental monitoring showed nuisance dusts below the criteria of 10 milligrams per cubic meter. The authors conclude that full integration of HVLV with trim tools is feasible and they recommend that manufacturers of pneumatic tools market trim tools with integral hoods for use with HVLV systems. They note that while Boeing has established full control of composites dust in the facility, the extent of HVLV integration with trim tools is not sufficient for an indepth NIOSH study of HVLV.
