DOT (Department of Transportation) Needs Better Assurance That Transit Systems Are Maintaining Buses

Although the Department of Transportation has provided substantial funds to support bus purchases by local transit systems, it has not systematically monitored how well buses are maintained. As a result, DOT has little assurance that its sizable investment is adequately protected. GAO found that bus reliability in many transit systems is deteriorating and that timely preventive maintenance is not always performed. The Congress has passed legislation to increase emphasis on maintenance. GAO proposes recommendations to assist in implementing this legislation.
