Archeological Overview and Management Plan for the Newport Army Ammunition Plant, Vermillion County, Indiana

As part of a general program in the historic preservation planning, a sample survey of archeological resources on the facility has been completed. Ten percent of the facility lands available for review contain 144 archeological sites: 20 either exclusively historic resources or having historic components, and the rest prehistoric sites (primarily Archaic, with some Late Woodland/Mississippian components). Management recommendations include on-site inspections of known resources, test investigations of a sample of known sites to evaluate National Register eligibility, and more intensive evaluation of paleoenvironmental factors for use in predicting prehistoric site locations.
